Kidding Around

"Standing just 8 inches tall, these Nigerian Dwarf Goat kids - named Calli and Livi - are part o the tribe of goats owed by the Cunningham Family. The Cunningham;s originally bought the miniature goats to clear brush, but discovered that goats milk made great soap, so Whitetail Lane Farm Handmade Goat Milk Soap (www.goatmilksoaper.com) was born. Human mom, Jamie along with her kids, 13 year old Kaylyn and 10 year old Kyle, use milk from goat mom Annie to create about 35 different combinations of soap that are not only great for dry skin but are pretty too."

"The Cunningham Kids will be selling soaps they made at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts Kids Day on July 8"

Whitetail Lane Farm New Website!

We are so excited to announce that our new Website is live!
A couple of months ago we went on the search for a web developer to help us with SEO! After contacting a couple different companies we decided to hire John Flude from EightOneFour. We loved that he was from the Central Pa area! (Kyle just wanted to work with him because he thought he logo was awesome) He was patient with all the questions we had for him and went above and beyond what we had contracted. We are greatly appreciative to him for all his hard work.

Do you know what's in your Soap?

Have you ever taken the time to look at the ingredients list on your store bought soap? Can you pronounce any of the ingredients?  Most popular soaps contain ingredients that are bad for the environment and your skin! Soap should really only contain natural, simple ingredients like oil, a liquid, and lye.

A popular soap label (left) and our label (right)

Whitetail Lane Farm Goat Milk soaps only contain the best oils, fresh goats milk and sodium hydroxide (lye). Mixing these together creates a chemical reactions that saponifies the oils and goats milk creating soap.

We carefully choose all the oils in our soaps for their unique properties they bring to each bar.

Olive Oil - attracts external moisture to your skin, helping to keep skin soft and supple.

Coconut Oil -  is moisturizing, conditioning and protects the skin. It helps to create a nice hard bar of soap that lathers well.

Palm Oil - makes a hard bar that cleans well and is also mild. *Our Palm Oil is sourced from a member of the Round table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSOP) which supports the growth and use of sustainable Palm Oil

Shea Butter  - beneficial for treating dry skin, blemishes, skin discoloration, scars and wrinkles. Rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, Shea Butter forms a breathable barrier on your skin that helps to protect it from harsh elements like the sun and wind

Avocado Oil - contains vitamins A, D and E, which makes it healing as well as Moisturizing

Castor Oil - Creates a nice stable, fluffy lather. Castor Oil is a fantastic humectant, attracting and holding moisture to the skin.

The next generation of Milk Producers of Whitetail Lane Farm Goat Milk Soap.

Our new Nigerian Dwarf Goat kids now have names!! On our farm we only name the kids if we are keeping them and these 3 girls are staying with us and we (especially our human kids) couldn't be more exited! They were born on Saturday May 23rd and are growing bigger and stronger everyday. They have just began to explore outside of their pen under the strict supervision of Annie. Their favorite thing is to jump up and off this little piece of pallet. Hopefully tomorrow we can get some video of these guys, they are just too darn cute not to!

Meet Livi, Avi and Calli!

Livi
Avi
Calli

A little info about these cuties:

Their breed: They are purebred unregistered Nigerian Dwarf Goats, which is a miniature dairy goat breed known for their easy maintenance and small stature. Their milk is much higher in butterfat and protein then most other dairy goat breeds, which is why we choose them to produce the milk for our Goat Milk Soaps

Their gender: They are does, which is the term for female goats.

What they eat: The kids will have 24 hour access to Annie to nurse as needed for the first 3 weeks. They will begin to eat hay after only a few days old, mimicking their mom. Once they reach the 3 week old stage the kids are allowed to nurse during the day and will be put in a separate pen at night with plenty of bedding, water and grain. This allows us to begin milking Annie so we can use her wonderful milk in all of our soaps.

Kidding time! Baby goats = New Goats Milk Soap from Whitetail Lane Farms!

It's the best time of the year at Whitetail Lane Farm, KIDDING SEASON! This year we have only 1 doe to kid, Annie. She gave us 3 girls! In keeping with her tradition she waited until we left for a long weekend to have them. Thankfully she is a fantastic mom and handled everything like a champ. Our farm sitters, The Kerr's, were ecstatic to find them when they arrived to do the barn chores on Saturday morning. We are extremely grateful to them for taking such great care of everything. And now the best part, the pictures!

Morning Play Time

Every morning the goats are feed their grain and hay. After they eat we like to spend a few minutes playing with them. The problem is only keeping it to a few minutes. They are just so cute and playful that those few minutes could easily end up to being a hour!

2015 HSGC Conference

Last week Nathan and I attended the annual Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild Conference. The event was held at the Westin in Indianapolis, Indiana April 17-20.

This year was our first year attending and we had a blast. It was packed full with speakers, demonstrations, parties, good times, fun people and FREE STUFF! The highlight was receiving my Cold Process Soap Certification!

Some of our soaps were on display at the soapers showcase!

We arrived a day early to take 2 special session classes that were offered. I took the soaping 101 class and it was a great review of the material I had been studying in preparation for the Certified Soap makers Exam. The exam was on that same night after the special session classes. As you saw in the picture earlier I PASSED!! What a relief to have that behind me. Nathan attend a photography class and gained valuable information on how to take better photos of our products!

Saturday was the first official day of the conference. Group Lectures and sessions filled out the day with a networking lunch to break up the day. Sunday and Monday continued with more group lectures and sessions. Some of our favorite sessions included Kevin Dunn's Little White Lyes, Lela Baker's Anatomy of a Compelling Brand, David Fisher's Creating a Mission Statement and Charlene Simon's How to Open a Soap Shop.  We filled in our free time by visiting with soap supply vendors.

The conference was a wonderful way to meet and network with other soap makers. There were soapers from all over the world, including Hong Kong, Canada, and the Bahamas. We are so lucky to belong to such a great organization as the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild. We look forward to attending more conferences!

Blackberry Sage Butterfly Swirl Goat Milk Soap

Now that the holiday rush is over, I finally have a chance to participate in another one of Amy Warden's Soap Challenges at greatcakessoapworks.com. This months challenge is the Butterfly Swirl that was perfected by one of our fellow challenge participants, Handmade in Florida. She makes some of the very best butterfly swirls. The Butterfly swirl is a modified drop swirl and hanger swirl, where your bar of soap ends up looking like half a butterfly. When placed next to another bar it makes a butterfly.
Love how our Butterfly Swirl turned out and I can't wait to see all the other soaps in this challenge!
