Ingredients We Use and Why we use them

We make all of our soaps completely from scratch, using raw ingredients and recipes that we have created. All soaps are made with oils or fat, liquid and sodium hydroxide (lye). As you know oils and water don’t mix but with the help of the lye they do! It changes the oil and water chemical composition so they become soap. It is also important to note that although lye is used in the making of the soap there is no lye left in the finish product as it is transformed in the soap making process.
All of our products come with the ingredients listed on each individual package and they are also listed with each listing.

Oils that we use in our soap and why we use them:

Olive Oil - Extremely Moisturizing, makes a nice slippery lather, has low cleansing properties that make the bar nice an mild for those with sensitive skin.

Coconut Oil - Provides lots of lather and large fluffy bubbles, is high cleansing and makes the bar hard

Palm Oil - makes a nice mild lather and helps to make a hard bar. All of our palm is from sustainable farms in the USA.

Avocado Oil - a rich moisturizing oil that is high in vitamin E and other vitamins and minerals.

Castor Oil - A thick clear oil that provides a nice creamy lather.

Shea Butter - adds a lotion like lather, heavy duty moisturizer

Liquids we use in our soap and why we use them :

Goat Milk - Goat’s milk is a natural emollient that helps soothe and moisturize the skin. It contains vitamins A, B6, B12 and E. Goat’s milk has 3 times more beta-casein than cow’s milk. Caseins are easily absorbed into the skin and allow for quick hydration of dry skin. It adds lots of vitamin and nutrients and makes a fantastic, creamy, moisturizing soap.

Here is a great article about using goat milk soap.

Other Additives we sometimes use and why we use them :

Colloidal Oatmeal micro-fine, ground oatmeal is not rough or abrasive. In lotion it can create a barrier over the skin making it a great additive for those with extra dry skin. We use this in all of our soaps.

Kaolin Claya mild, white, fluffy clay. It's good for light masks or scrubs, and gives a silkiness and creaminess to soaps.

Poppy Seeds - used as an exfoliatant and to make soaps look pretty.

Why use Goat Milk Soap and Handmade products that can be found locally in State College PA!

Why use Goat Milk Soap and Handmade products that can be found locally in State College PA!

Recently I engage in a conversation on the Happy Valley Moms Facebook Page that is geared to Mom in the State College Area.

The question was "Soap help! Since we started potty training (and lots of hand washing), my son's hands are so dry! We use j.r. Watkins which I thought was relatively gentle. But apparently not. Any recommendations for gentle hand wash? Preferably something without a lot of potentially harmful ingredients etc. I have been putting some coconut oil on his hands to moisturize but that isn't helping. My hands have been worse since potty training too and I have eczema but I can use heavy duty therapeutic lotions as an adult. I am trying dove sensitive bar for me now but not sure if a bar will be a pain to use with him. Is there a gentle hand soap folks recommend?"

I commented on the blog about my homemade products and others commented about commercially made products and I was shocked about the misconceptions there are about commercially made soaps.

Commercially made  soaps are not really soap at all. They are detergents that usually contain chemical hardeners, foaming agents and artificial fragrances, they remove all the glycerin from the 'soap' to add to other products(lotions) they make. Glycerin is a natural skin emollient (skin softener) that attracts water from the surrounding air. Instead they use things like Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (a cleansing agent), Stearic Acid and petrochemicals.

Our handmade soaps contain all their glycerin, plus use Olive oil, coconut oil, and many other skin loving oils. Homemade soap is pure soap. It gently cleanses away excess oils and bacteria and doesn't take away your skins natural oils. made with simple ingredients that are good for your skin. Give it a try and see the difference for yourself.

Its been awhile since we have talked about Goat Milk Soap!

Life has been busy at Whitetail Lane Farm. We have been super busy making new Goat Milk Soap products - Whipped Sugar Scrubs, Lip Balms and Bath Bombs.

We have also been busy organizing our summer show schedule - which will be posted very soon!
We also got a new Australian Cattle Dog named Remi! He is full of energy and super cute, which gets in out of a lot of trouble. He is a happy addition to our family since we lost our Kelly to cancer this past fall.
Our family has been busy with spring sports and gearing up for the summer horse show season to start.

Amy Warden Soap Challenge - Clyde Slide Swirl - Sweet Orange and Chili Pepper

I recently found some free time between making holiday soaps to join Amy Warden’s Soap Challenge and try out a new soaping  technique. This month’s technique is the “Clyde Slide” perfected by the super fantastic Clyde from Vibrant Soaps (his YouTube videos are some of my favorite to watch!)
This technique is a variation of the in-the-pot swirl, and it's one that I will definitely be using again. My husband has been asking me to make him some more Sweet Orange and Chili Pepper scented soap, so I decided to use that for the fragrance. I decided to use Orange, Red and Black against an almost natural background.

I poured the colors into the base colors similar to how Clyde had done on a few of his videos.

After pouring into the mold I swirled the top and put it to rest in the freezer overnight.

It was so hard not to cut this too early, I wanted to cut it as soon as it was poured to see what was on the inside. It was worth the wait! I couldn’t be more excited about how this turned out.

Each bar within the mold was different.

These Sweet Orange and Chili Pepper Bars will be available on October 10th!

Ingredients: Olive Oil, Coconut oil, Palm Oil, Goats Milk, Sodium hydroxide, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Fragrance, Colloidal Oatmeal, Colorant (Mica)

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts Children's and Youth Day

For the past couple of years the kids of Whitetail Lane Farm have developed their own line of goat milk soaps to sell at the Central Pa Festival of the Arts Children's and Youth day in downtown State College. This year was their most successful year yet. They sold out of many scents and their lip balms went fast! We ended up only bringing about 15 bars home with us.
Here is there set up this year. It was designed and set up by Kaylyn!
Interacting with customers!
Keeping an eye on the cash box!
Thanks to everyone that supported them yesterday. They have already began to design and develop their soaps for next year!
